Rick Rubin is a legendary producer. Whether you like his style or not he has left his mark on the music industry. He set up Def Jam and American recordings and they released some classic albums by artists such as the Beastie Boys, The Cult, Public Enemy, Masters of Reality, Danzig, Metallica and one of my nostalgic greats by Wolfsbane. It is one of his most recently produced albums I want to bring to the readers attention though. He produced the Black Sabbath album 13.

Julia and I were wed at Gretna Green on Thursday 24th July 2014. We have been together for 13 years and thought it was about time we made the right commitment. I am not sure why we have not got married in the past. I think you tend to feel it is not the most necessary part of the relationship, not when you can ride the waves of turbulent waters and have proved your commitment without any ceremony. We felt it would be hypocritical to be wed in a church so that was out of the question to start with. We do not have high principals about it but felt that option would not be correct for us. That led us onto which venue. The original blacksmiths shop at Gretna was just right.

Guitars and amps, I love the world. One of the aspects that I have an interest in is the signature series. Signature versions are there to sell the product first of all. If there were no guitar heroes you would probably not get the interest. Guitar heroes do exist and because of this we have the best adverts for the instrument. It is astounding how may different amplifiers and guitars that have been produced but it is just as astonishing how may are based on well-known players. Brian May has Vox ac30 amps with his red special, John Lennon and Fargen, Joe Satriani and his Marshall JVM410H together with the Ibanez JS2410, Kerry King and the Marshall 2203KK played with the BC Rich bearing his moniker! The list now goes on and on.

This took my fancy. I thought the info-graphic was splendid and for any guitar player like myself makes me chuckle.

When Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire, the guitar reached a near mythological level of cool in the world. In fact, the mystique surrounding the guitar and guitar players permeates throughout culture that seems to transcend the simple (yet quite enjoyable!) act of playing the guitar. With their recently published infographic Encore Music Lessons breaks down the vast depths of the guitar’s ‘cool.’

I have never been a cycle racing fan. I previously tried to watch the Tour de France a few times and found it long and, at times, the racing situations did not make sense. I live in Yorkshire and it came here in 2 stages for the first time. My hometown of Harrogate hosted the stage 1 finish and the whole entourage of trucks and broadcasters came to bring the circus to a usually sleepy old spa town. I went to see it 2 days before the start and saw the amount of money it must cost to put on a show like that. Going with a friend who cycles he told me about some of the brands and I felt the excitement building. It surprised me that I was getting sucked into the spirit. The weather was good and we went to a local pub and soaked in a truly superb atmosphere. Harrogate’s central streets were closed off and it became clear this event was like no other. I watch Moto GP and have also worked as a volunteer ... Read more »

Mars has played host to a number of rovers. All have lasted longer than they were expected to. Spirit and Opportunity have brought us some stunning images and have helped NASA understand elements of the geology that makes the red planet a possible location of some form of like years ago. Both rovers were made to last 90 days on the planets surface. Each rover landed on the Martian surface in 2004. Spirit lasted till March 2010 and even more incredible is that fact opportunity is still roving! One day, with the distance of the Sun and Earth increasing from Mars it will only be time before the components cannot store enough energy and it will fall silent. Until that time we have to hand it to those engineers that have made those rovers last for so long.

I am revisiting Dune again. In the book series I am reading Frank Herberts Children of Dune once more. It is the second reading as the books are complex but awe-inspiring in there scope. I make no apologies for discussing Dune again as I feel it demands deliberation of all kinds. I was reading the fabulous blog the illustrator Ron Miller wrote on the 30th Anniversary of the David Lynch film version. He was the production artist and his wife Judith made and designed some of the model ideas. Ron writes with great gusto about the intricate detail that went into the prod ... Read more »

Doctor Tony Iommi, now that sounds good, and it is now fact. Black Sabbath has been the number one influence in my musical taste. The moment I heard the original albums was a revelation. I have never looked back. Tony has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Coventry University in recognition of his contribution to the world of popular music. That was in November 2013.

I was incredibly pleased he got the award. He ... Read more »

The 2014 TT had some great moments. In the UK the coverage was as good as ever via ITV4. An hour was dedicated every evening. You can look up results and see how close one race in particular was.

I want to discuss the SES TT Zero race. It gave John McGuinness his 21st TT victory. The electric race at the TT is still in its infancy. The great element this year was the actual step forward that seemed to take place. There was one main team, Team Mugen Shinden. They had invested a large sum of money in the project and spent many hours developing the components. It resulted in them winning the Motul team award for excellence.

Yes this is another entry regarding what I believe is one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time, Frank Herbert’s Dune. I have finally seen the recent film about the 1974 attempt at making a surrealist version of the story. The art house director Alejandro Jodorowsky gathered a troop of ‘warriors’ around him to create what he classed as an LSD trip minus the actual drug. The documentary film describing the project is worth watching, as it truly was way ahead of its time.
